The rapid integration of artificial intelligence into education creates new opportunities, but also clear challenges for language teachers. New-Gen Language Teachers, an Erasmus+ project, responds to this need by systematically building ethical and technical AI competences among educators.
The project focuses on the following objectives:
-
Strengthening AI competences among pre-service language teachers to support responsible and confident use of AI in teaching.
-
Developing ethical judgement by addressing issues such as bias, transparency, and data protection through practical, risk-aware learning formats.
-
Creating practical, multilingual resources, including a gamified digital toolkit designed for diverse linguistic and cultural contexts.
-
Embedding results in teacher education by integrating the framework into BA and MA programmes to ensure long-term sustainability.
-
Building digital resilience to help future teachers adapt to ongoing technological change and apply innovative pedagogical approaches.
-
Supporting international exchange through structured cross-border collaboration and shared practices among language teachers.
-
Reaching in-service teachers by transferring AI knowledge and ethical practices into continuing professional development.
Planned Results
The project is designed to deliver scalable, practice-oriented, and empirically tested resources over a 24-month period. It moves beyond theoretical discussion and focuses on active, scenario-based learning for language teachers.
The core outputs form a coherent set of learning resources:
-
Structured Curriculum Module
A 20-hour curriculum on the ethical use of AI in language teaching. It serves as the academic foundation of the project and is piloted with at least 200 pre-service and in-service teachers in the partner countries. -
Gamified Toolkit and MOOC
This component receives the largest share of the project budget (€102,000), reflecting its focus on engagement and practical use. The gamified toolkit offers an interactive environment for developing ethical decision-making, complemented by an open-access MOOC for structured, self-paced learning and wide dissemination. -
Adaptation Guide
A practical guide supporting the integration of the curriculum module into existing BA and MA teacher education programmes at other higher education institutions.
The overall framework is aligned with key EU policy instruments, including the Digital Education Action Plan and the EU Artificial Intelligence Act.
